Dhoby Ghaut Interchange

So you know we have been riding the MRT (subway) around the country (remember even though Singapore feels like a city, it is a country).  One of the major interchanges on the MRT has made us laugh from day one.  The mysterious piped in voice of the MRT alerts you to upcoming stops and safety information.  It is a woman's voice with a British accent because Singapore used to be a British colony.  Of course, we think it sounds cool, because well anyone speaking with a British accent sounds cool, right?  Especially when you are as well-traveled as me.  (I told an Australian mom at the play area, I liked her accent and she smiled, thanked me, and then moved away from me.  She seemed normal, I am sure I scared her!)  I think it is safe to say that seasoned travelers are not complimenting people on their accents.  Oh well, maybe in another life I will come back cool!  Doubtful though.

On one of our first MRT trips, Keylime decides to try and imitate the MRT voice with the British accent.  M and I love the way she says it so we are constantly asking her to say the names of the stops, particularly this one stop, Dhoby Ghaut Interchange.

Do you think an almost 8 year old is too young to be embarrassed by her parents?  In case you even needed to think about this answer, let me answer for you.  You bettcha she is embarrassed.  M and I ask her over and over to repeat the phrases.  She grows tired (and crabby . . . oops, did I just type that?) of our request.  We ask her to say it at the apartment, on walks, and of course while we are on the MRT (go ahead and now imagine what the others on the train must be thinking.)  M and I laugh like kids.  We love it.

Here is a video on You Tube of her saying it (Sorry for the additional click but it is too big for this site.)  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2TJiexoasKo

So here is the crowd participation part of our blog.  That's right you read that correctly.  Upload a video on You Tube of you, your kids, your family, etc. saying the phrase Keylime is saying.  Come on, many of your kids will love this.  The name of our video on You Tube is  "DG Interchange 008" so name your video "DG Interchange" plus add something else to yours (like your initials, nickname, date, etc.) so we can identify the different videos.  Keylime really wants to hear you all say these phrases.  She will be the final judge on who is the winner.  The prize you ask . . . well not a trip to Singapore (sorry loved ones . . . too expensive) so how about bragging rights on our blog!

Here's the phrase to say:
"Dhoby Ghaut Interchange"
"Please mind the platform gap"

So, on your mark, get set, start the video!  You have one week from today!

The girls also think the MRT doubles as a gymnastic center with the cool rings
(to the delight of other passengers, NOT!)
No one wants to stand by us!

J,

I love reading your blogs. No offense to my newborn baby, but reading it is one of the highlights of my day. I especially liked today's post and laughed out loud when you said, "Perhaps I'll be cool in another life. Doubtful though." Keep up the entertaining work. Key Lime's British accent and facial expressions were hilarious!

Love,
Aunt K

The best part of waking up - finding another post from the Hites. That Youtube is hilarious, not as funny as the Jet lag one tho. Don't worry about what other folks think of you, its not like you're going to see these people again. Ask away about the accents!!
