Da dum da dummmm . . . da dum da dummmm

So let's talk about weddings.  (that's right, now, apparently, I have become an expert on cultural wedding customs.)

The people of Singapore like to take pictures (they did in Beijing also) but there is a noticeable difference in Singapore.  Instead of just standing there smiling in front of something, you see more people holding their hands in a V above their head, making funny faces, or doing the peace signs.  They love making the peace sign in Beijing too.  They will jump in the air to get a shot.  They'll do anything silly and fun!  I feel like a party pic guy is hiding somewhere ready to jump out and get their picture.

So these fun pictures are also part of their wedding pictures too.  We have seen brides in their dresses climb trees, groom carrying the bride, jumping up in the air, riding on escalators, hanging from statues, hands up in the air and making very silly faces.   The brides are in their pretty dresses and the grooms are dressed up as well.  We have seen them on various days of the week, but never on Saturday (don't know if that is coincidence or not.)  I have never seen a wedding party or group with them, just the bride and groom and the photographer (sometimes more than one.)  Maybe these shots aren't taken on their actual wedding day?  Really, what do I know?

So I have become obsessed with the brides.  (I think I have a little OCD in me.  Just ask my kids how many times I ask them if I shut the garage door . . . and that is before we even get to Rock Hill.  They have grown so tired of the question that now they very quickly and with what appears no thought say, "yes Mom, you shut the garage door (groan)."  Then I reply, "Ah, it didn't even sound like you looked , I don't think you even looked!" and then I have to go back and check.  Good thing kids can't trade-in their parents.)

Back to the brides.  The first brides I saw were at the Botanical Gardens a few weeks ago.  (I was too embarrassed to take any pictures though, or too polite, call it what you want.  I chickened out.)  The pictures they were having taken were very fun and festive.  So I am on the hunt to find the brides.  The next bride I see is in Beijing.  So I pretended like I was walking by and am not really taking their picture but, snap, I take a picture (I am so smooth, aren't I?)  I was moving so my sophisticated camera (oh, wait, I just have my phone camera) got a blurry shot.  That isn't going to do.  I have got to get closer and not be moving.   I am smiling and bowing (why, I don't know) so everyone knows I come in peace?  So, snap, I get a picture.

In China, the color of red is a sign of good luck and green means growth.

These two were really cute.
Though, the groom looked like he was 12.
I am thinking, son, does your mom know you just got married?

See the photographer, to the right, with a real camera?  Yea, that's right the photographer and his crew
stepped aside so me and my iPhone can snap a pic.  Then, oops, accidentally had it on video, give me just a minute!   Didn't mean for that to happen.  Snap.

I just finished telling you about the fun poses that I have seen the couples doing, and of course, the only actual pictures I have to show you are the more traditional poses.  So now, you have to just imagine these same people jumping up and down, making silly faces, carrying each other.  Next time, I will try to actually take a picture when all the fun is going on rather than gawk like a geeky tourist (it is going to be hard but for you, I will try.)  Sorry.

August 1, 2011- Saw another bride today so wanted to add the pictures.
That's right with my trusy wedding radar.
They were standing right at the river front.
(darn the luck cause there wasn't room for me on the other side to get a better picture.)

She has brown short boots on with her dress.
