There are shops that specialize in toast. That's right, I said toast. You know, bread you toast in the toaster. There isn't just one chain that sells this but multiple that compete in this market. A busy intersection may have two or three toast places. They are busy all the time . . . need a mid morning snack, need an afternoon snack, need a late night snack . . . how about some toast? We were in this one at 8:00 p.m. on a Sunday night. The menus are simple. Toast with butter, sugar or peanut butter are options but also with Kaya (which is a local mixture of egg and coconut). They also have some hot and cold beverages.
After we order, M and the girls are standing at the counter, watching the woman make our toast. She does it on a grill (this is no ordinary toast, this is fancy toast.) The girls are anxiously awaiting our toast and one of the women tells them that they will deliver the toast to the table so they can have a seat. (She was being nice since she thought we were waiting for our order.) M explains that they want to watch them make toast. (That's right ladies and gentlemen, one of our excursions across the world is to watch people make toast!) The three women behind the counter, just laughed. My family is so funny.
Meanwhile, I am the lunatic who is snapping pictures left and right in the toast place (guess I shouldn't have just made fun of M and the girls, huh?) Can you imagine what the other patrons must have been thinking . . . Crazy people, it is just toast!
Oh, as we are eating our toast (and it was delicious), I see a sign right as you come in that says no photos or video in the restaurant! (Think of someone snapping pictures wildly in a Starbucks at home!) Oops. It is official, we are clueless tourists!
